Andrew Garfield and Oliver James MontgomeryDr. Kate Tomas' love spell has fizzled.
The Amazing Spider-Man actor and self-proclaimed "professional witch" and philosopher have parted ways after a brief romance. Kate confirmed their breakup Oct. 11.
"Are you still dating Andrew Garfield? If so, tell him I'm a fan of him, please," an Instagram user commented on the scholar's Instagram page Oct. 11, to which she responded, "We broke up months ago but I'm sure he will be happy to know that he is loved."
The Social Network actor and his ex, who notes on her website she holds a doctoral degree in Theology from the University of Oxford and is a "world expert in Mysticism and Catholic women mystics," were last photographed in public together in July, when they attended the 2024 Wimbledon Tennis Championships in England together.
The pair had stepped out together as a couple in late March. The two were spotted holding hands while on a double date with Phoebe Bridgers and Bo Burnham at a restaurant in Malibu, Calif., just days after Andrew and Kate were seen shopping for groceries in Los Angeles.
Andrew, 41, has not publicly addressed the pair's breakup and has never commented on their romance.
Kate has faced increased scrutiny since their past relationship was made public.
On the same Instagram post on which she confirmed their breakup, a user asked her, "Will you ever stop talking about Andrew?" Kate responded, "Sweetheart, the only people who ever talk about or centre a man in my life, work, business and social media are women like you."
Kate had spoken out against the criticism in July.
"It’s frustrating that no matter how accomplished or impactful a woman is, it’s always going to be more interesting if they are in a relationship with a man," she told the Sunday Times at the time. "I don’t want to sit under anybody’s shadow."
She further criticized the media, saying, "They will take maybe 150 pictures, then they choose the four where you look worst." She said that the most depressing thing about it was the "misogynistic nature of that interest — criticism of how a woman looks, of what [she] does for work."
Kate, who had noted on her podcast that "literally thousands of woman" had criticized her appearance, also told the newspaper that she "fell back on the practices" she teaches in order to leave "that victim space" and reclaim her power.
"That might be screaming into a pillow, or doing a cord-cutting spell, or putting a dome of energy, like a bell jar, over somebody that’s actively harmful," she said. "The most powerful form of psychic protection is knowing who you are and being OK with that."
