Eagles vs. Buccaneers wild-card weekend playoff preview: Tampa Bay hosts faltering Philly

Two years ago, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers hosted the Philadelphia Eagles during wild-card weekend. The 2023 postseason will feature the same exact matchup, with the teams' seedings one of the major differences this NFC No. 4 vs. No. 5 matchup.
Another one is that there will be no Tom Brady under center for the Bucs. And the overachieving Eagles team that made the Super Bowl the following year has been replaced by a team limping – literally – into the playoffs.
Following a 10-1 start, the Eagles lost five of their final six – a Christmas Day victory over the New York Giants the exception. They are the first playoff team to lose five of their last six and make the playoffs since the 1999 Miami Dolphins.
That Miami team’s fate? A 62-7 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in what was Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino’s final game.
What happened last time?
The defending Super Bowl champ Buccaneers, the No. 2 seed in the NFC, dominated the Eagles, 31-15. They led 31-0 going into the fourth quarter and Brady threw for two touchdowns. Tampa Bay lost the next week to the eventual Super Bowl-champion Los Angeles Rams.

The Eagles spring boarded from the defeat and dominated much of the next two regular seasons, going 26-5 (including the Super Bowl loss to the Kansas City Chiefs) until their recent stretch of mediocrity.
Eagles injuries
Philadelphia entered the final game of the regular season, a 27-10 loss to the Giants, without wide receiver DeVonta Smith (ankle). Running back D'Andre Swift didn't play due to illness. Things only became worse for them on the injury front at MetLife Stadium.
A.J. Brown suffered a right knee injury and looked to be in serious pain after landing awkwardly. The fifth-year receiver grabbed for the knee and initially remained down on the field before limping off and heading to the locker room. Jalen Hurts exited temporarily with a right middle finger injury and returned.
“It popped out," Hurts said after the game.
Eventually, head coach Nick Sirianni pulled his starters with the division title out of reach.
How did the Bucs win the NFC South?
All Tampa Bay needed Sunday was to beat the lowly Carolina Panthers to secure their third straight NFC South title, and the Buccaneers made it harder on themselves than it needed to be. Hampered quarterback Baker Mayfield could not push the ball down the field. The Buccaneers' defense shut out the Panthers and they escaped with a 9-0 victory and the division crown.
